What is a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner is...

  • Nurse practitioners have at least a Master's Degree.

  • They are trained in diagnosing and treating illness and disease as well as how to prevent disease.

  • They can order tests, interpret results, and prescribe medication.

  • They must pass a board certification exam in their area of specialty in order to practice.

  • Nurse practitioners train to look at the whole picture of the patient's life in order to better understand and treat the patient.

  • Their scope of practice is regulated by state; in Nebraska they have the ability to practice independently.

  • They will refer for further treatment if the patient needs a different type of care.
